Innovation Fair Underway in Dhaka: Discontent Among Startups

Techvision24 Desk: The Bangladesh Innovation Fair commenced in Dhaka with the primary objective of empowering young entrepreneurs, local innovators, and emerging technology startups. Designed as a platform to accelerate a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy, the expo aimed to showcase cutting-edge solutions, bolster the local digital ecosystem, and connect early-stage founders with investors and policymakers.

However, despite these ambitious goals, the execution of the event quickly drew sharp criticism due to severe organizational shortcomings and misplaced priorities.

Corporate Giants Dominate the Main Floor
Despite being branded as an “Bangladesh Innovation Fair,” the organizers largely neglected the startup ecosystem on the main floor. Prime space was instead dominated by large, established corporations and traditional institutions, including Bata, United Healthcare, City Bank, MTB, Dutch-Bangla Bank, NBR, and Bangladesh Bank.

Startups Relegated to Humid Basement
In stark contrast, promising startups and young innovators were assigned to a cramped, hot, and humid basement. With extremely limited space and poor ventilation, the setup was far from adequate. Adding to the frustration, the Prime Minister—who officially inaugurated the fair—departed after touring the main floor without visiting the startup section. For young entrepreneurs who had invested considerable time, capital, and effort to showcase their work, this represented a major disappointment and a missed opportunity.

Bureaucratic Execution and Coordination Gaps
Industry observers emphasized that this event is emblematic of a broader structural issue within government departments and agencies. It highlights ongoing challenges in management capability, accountability, and inter-agency coordination. Stakeholders warned that unless administrative execution improves at the bureaucratic level, even the most well-intentioned national policies will struggle to build a thriving startup economy.
