Pioneer of perceptual computing reunites with former team to guide the future of physical AI

Widely recognized for pioneering perceptual computing during his tenure at Intel, where his work ultimately hatched RealSense, Dr. Bhowmik brings nearly 25 years of expertise in computational perception and artificial intelligence to his role on the board.

About Dr. Achin Bhowmik
Born in Tinnandina, Sirajgonj, Dr. Bhowmik completed his higher secondary schooling from Rajshahi College in 1990, securing 6th place on the combined merit list. He then graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, with a full scholarship. Subsequently, he earned his Ph.D. degree from Auburn University in the state of Alabama, USA, in 2000, with a graduate research assistantship.
After completing his higher studies, Dr. Bhowmik joined Intel Corporation as a research scientist. There he rose through the leadership ranks and became the first Vice President of Bangladeshi origin in the company’s history. At Intel, he led the Perceptual Computing Group, responsible for the research, engineering, operations, and businesses in the areas of 3D sensing and interactive computing, computer vision and artificial intelligence, autonomous robots and drones, and immersive virtual and merged reality devices.
In 2017, Dr. Bhowmik joined Starkey, a privately-held medical device company with over 5,000 employees and operations in over 100 countries worldwide. As the Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of Engineering, he is responsible for the company’s technology strategy, global research, product development and engineering departments, and leading the drive to transform hearing aids into multifunction health and communication devices with advanced sensors and artificial intelligence technologies.
Dr. Bhowmik is also on the faculty of Stanford University in California, where he holds an adjunct professor position, advises research, and lectures in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, multisensory perceptual augmentation technologies, and intelligent systems. He has also held adjunct and guest professor positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Kent State University, Ohio, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar.
Awards and Honors
Dr. Bhowmik serves on the board of trustees for the National Captioning Institute, board of directors for OpenCV, industry advisory board for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, and board of advisors for the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also on the board of directors and advisors for several technology companies.
His awards and honors include Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Fellow and President-Elect of the Society for Information Display (SID), Industrial Distinguished Leader award from the Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association, IEEE Distinguished Industry Speaker award, TIME’s Best Inventions, Red Dot Design award, and the Artificial Intelligence Breakthrough award. He has authored over 200 publications, including two books and 38 issued patents.
Dr. Bhowmik and his work have been covered in numerous press articles, including TIME, Fortune, Wired, USA Today, US News & World Reports, Wall Street Journal, CBS News, Forbes, Bloomberg Businessweek, Scientific American, Popular Mechanics, MIT Technology Review, EE Times, The Verge, etc.
